Information and Support on Mental Illness
Special Ed Resources
- CASE (Community Alliance for Special Education)- A special education legal advocacy resource. This is a good resource when your child does not qualify for Special Education services when they clearly need it.)
- PHP (Parents Helping Parents)- As a parent-directed, community-based organization, PHP’s mission was developed in response to the need in our community for information, training, and support services for families who have children with special needs and the professionals who serve them. Established in 1976 as a nonprofit agency, Parents Helping Parents, meets the needs of one of our community’s most vulnerable populations – individuals with any special need and their families. This includes children of all ages and all backgrounds who have a need for special services due to any special need, including but not limited to illness, cancer, accidents, birth defects, neurological conditions, premature birth, learning or physical disabilities, mental health issues, and attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder, to name a few
- DREDF – The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund is a leading national civil rights law and policy center directed by individuals with disabilities and parents who have children with disabilities. They provide free special education workshops to the community on the second Monday of each month. This is a great resource for East Bay parents.
- Wrightslaw – A good resource for accurate, reliable information about special education law, education law, and advocacy for children with disabilities. Parents, educators, advocates, and attorneys will find this website very useful.
- Nolo’s IEP Guide – This is an excellent resource for parents who want to become their child’s advocate. It’s a surprisingly easy read and yet comprehensive and even provides sample letters. The only thing about Nolo books is that since the laws change, parents should be careful to purchase the latest edition.
